This new Arts & Crafts style home has many Greene & Greene inspired details in the kitchen and throughout the house.
This kitchen still uses many of the original 60's era "contemporary" birch cabinets. We modified and rearranged a few of them, and refreshed the finish on all of them. New zinc countertop, modern appliances, tile backsplash and a new custom pedestal table from our own shop completed the project.
This delightful cherry kitchen is crafted with Quality Custom Cabinetry, and features local New Hampshire "Tapestry" granite countertops. Our own custom shop built the special curved pieces for the island, which were finished to blend with the rest of the cabinetry.
This delightful new kitchen is an example of mixing contemporary style in a classic traditional home.
The cabinets are a combination of Quality and our own shop in cherry.
This contemporary multi-level island features a central granite counter with two different wood tops.
The island is an asymetrical curved shape, with a sleek modern leg support and contemporary stools.
In keeping with the modern style in this kitchen, we used bifolding horizontal doors at the wall cabinets. They are also practical, because once lifted open, they stay open and up out of the way while you are working in the kitchen.
This kitchen features clean lines and simple details that showcase the gorgeous Red Birch cabinet wood, topped by granite countertops honed to a soft matte finish. This cabinetry was made in our own shop, Vintage Custom Cabinetry.
A simple vessel sink rests on a copper countertop, which very nicely compliments the highly figured birds-eye maple.
The moldings also represent a blend of old and new, with the traditional Shaker style cherry cove molding installed in a modern floating style.
Highly figured birds-eye maple from the owner's prized stock was combined with cherry details for this elegant modern Craftsman style kitchen built by our own Vintage Custom Cabinetry shop.
Contemporary Kitchen Design
Interestingly, classic 'modern' – AKA 'The International Style' – is now almost a vintage style itself, since the origin of what most of us think of as contemporary or modern was actually first championed by the Bauhaus and cutting edge architects of the first half of the last Century. In the 1920's and 30's visionaries like Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe revolutionized design style by stripping architecture to its barest fundamentals and building from scratch with the materials and technology of the day.
Vintage Modern Interpretation
Our contemporary kitchen designs feature a sleeker look than our traditional work. We also often combine elements of contemporary style into traditional kitchen designs, and vice versa. Contemporary lighting, for example, can often work well as a cross-over element within a traditional design. Likewise, traditional elements can be artistically blended into a contemporary design – in fact, that is one of the hallmarks of the 'Post-Modern' style architecture and modern kitchens. Also, many of the principles of modern design – such as form follows function, truth in materials and the use of cutting-edge technology – can be as at home in traditional designs as they are in contemporary kitchen designs, which further blurs the line between the two.
